The Wizard of Oz Pantomime Script

Synopsis

Follow the yellow brick road to laughter, magic, and mayhem in The Wizard of Oz pantomime script. A pantomime adventure full of heart, hilarity, and high heels! When a whirlwind whisks Dorothy and Toto away to the fantastical land of Oz, her Aunt Em (the larger-than-life pantomime dame) is never far behind.

With the help of a brainless Scarecrow, a heartless Tin Man, and a cowardly Lion, Dorothy must defeat the Wicked Witch of the West and reach the mighty Wizard in Emerald City. But with a broken sat nav, talking scarecrows, and a cast of eccentric Ozians, things never go quite to plan.

Packed with witty jokes, audience participation, slapstick silliness, and toe-tapping tunes, this classic tale is reimagined for panto season with everything you’d expect including flying monkeys and the famous sparkly shoes. Perfect fun for all the family!

The Wizard of Oz Pantomime Script  Extract

(We hear AUNTY EM and DOROTHY talking offstage.)

Oh, what are the chances of that. I think someone’s coming. I’d better take up position in case they see me!

(SCARECROW runs across to the cross and mounts it letting his head hand and putting his arms up.)

There.

(AUNTY EM and DOROTHY enter. DOROTHY is still carrying Toto)

AUNTY EM Oh look Dorothy, a scarecrow.

DOROTHY He looks a bit sad.

(SCARECROW looks at the audience, smiles wide, and winks)

AUNTY EM Did you see that?

DOROTHY See what?

AUNTY EM That scarecrow just moved.

DOROTHY Oh no he didn’t.

AUNTY EM Ask the audience. Hey everyone, didn’t that scarecrow just move?

(Audience response)

DOROTHY Oh no he didn’t.

(Audience response)

Oh no he didn’t!

(Audience response)

He didn’t, He didn’t, He didn’t.

(Audience response)

All right, all right. Keep your hair on.

AUNTY EM (Aside) Not you sir, yours is long gone. Whoops. Too far?

SAT NAV Follow the yellow brick road.

AUNTY EM Oh shut up you stupid thing. (Aside) Not you sir, the phone.

(AUNTY EM taps it a little too forcefully)

SAT NAV Follow the yellow brick road. Follow the yellow brick road. Follow the –

(The phone gradually winds down and dies)

AUNTY EM The battery’s died! Fancy giving us a phone that isn’t charged in the middle of a fairytale land where electricity doesn’t exist. Stupid thing.

(AUNTY EM throws the phone away. It hits SCARECROW)

SCAREC. Ouch.

AUNTY EM Dorothy has your voice broken?

DOROTHY That wasn’t me.

AUNTY EM It wasn’t?

(They turn to look at the scarecrow. SCARECROW gives a little wave. They scream and run into the audience to hide)

SCAREC. Don’t run away!

(AUNTY EM and DOROTHY stop in their tracks)

You’re the only people I’ve seen all week.

AUNTY EM That’s a bit tragic.

(SCARECROW dismounts the post and joins AUNTY EM and DOROTHY)

SCAREC. My name’s Scarecrow.

DOROTHY Nice to meet you Scarecrow. I’m Dorothy and this is my Aunty Em, and our dog Toto.

SCAREC. Well hi there Toto. What a cute dog!

(We hear a deep growl and loud bark)

Lovely.

DOROTHY Don’t let that fool you. He’s a softy really.

AUNTY EM So what are you doing in that field all day?

SCAREC. Oh you know, scaring crows. I shouldn’t be here really. I can’t work for the farmer after what he said.

DOROTHY What did he say?

SCAREC. You’re fired.

DOROTHY I see.

AUNTY EM What did you do?

SCAREC. I took a lady on holiday to the Caribbean.

AUNTY EM Did Jamaica?

SCAREC. No she wanted to go.

DOROTHY So what are you going to do if you’ve lost your job?

SCAREC. I’ve no idea! Times like this I wish I’d listened to what my mother told me.

AUNTY EM What did she tell you?

SCAREC. I don’t know, I wasn’t listening. I don’t have a brain you see.

AUNTY EM You don’t have a brain?

SCAREC. No, the crows pecked it out last week.

DOROTHY How awful!

SCAREC. It’s not so bad really. I’m not in any pain. I can’t feel anything you see because I don’t have a central nervous system.

AUNTY EM You mean you can’t feel this?

(AUNTY EM slaps him round the face)

SCAREC. No, nothing.

AUNTY EM What about this?

(AUNTY EM punches him in the stomach)

SCAREC. Not a thing.

AUNTY EM What about this?

(AUNTY EM stamps on his foot)

SCAREC. Oh yes I felt that a bit. Are they steel toe capped?

AUNTY EM Not these dainty little things.
